Vision Boards
Creating a vision board is a powerful and creative way to clarify and visualize your goals, dreams, and aspirations. It’s all about setting your intentions and allowing your wildest ideas come together in the design.
1. Set Your Intentions
Life is beautiful. It is beautiful and chaotic and full of mystery. When you’re a mom, living life to the fullest can feel impossible because you have these amazing little children who need you and require your attention, devotion, and your sacrifice. But, that doesn’t mean we can’t have vision for our own lives. The best version of yourself is the healthy, balanced self!
Think about your goals: Reflect on what you want to achieve in different areas of your life (career, relationships, health, finances, personal growth, etc.).
Be specific: The more specific and focused your goals are, the better. For example, instead of saying “I want to be fit,” say “I want to run a 5k in 3 months.”
2. Gather Supplies
Poster board, cork board, or large paper: This is your base. It’s very important to pick out a base that you will be able to hang or place somewhere around your home.
Because you have set your intentions for your vision board, you should be seeking out specific magazines, photos, or printouts: These are for cutting out images and words that inspire you.
Scissors: For cutting out the images or phrases.
Glue, tape, or pins: To attach your images to the board. Get decorative with it!
Markers, stickers, or other decorative items. This will help you to personalize the board with your own style.
3. Visualize and Collect Images
Search for images and words. Look through magazines, Pinterest, or printouts for pictures, quotes, and phrases that align with your goals. And don’t be too nervous about everything being perfect. It’s YOUR vision. Make it as messy of a hodge podge as you desire! Like life, it doesn’t have to fit within any mold but your own.
Choose visuals that resonate — These should evoke the feelings and emotions of what you want to do in the short term or long term future (i.e., if you want to travel, you might include pictures of places you want to visit.)
Something that may add to your collection may be to consider personal symbolism: Some images may represent things in your life, like a new job, a healthy lifestyle, or financial success. My first vision board was covered in pictures of the milky way galaxy and northern lights, but I didn’t want to be an astronaut for study space (haha.) These images represented my desire to push boundaries and live life boldly in my pursuit of something greater than myself.
4. Organize and Lay Out Your Board
Create sections or a theme: You could divide your board into different areas (e.g., career, health, personal/spiritual growth, relationships), or you can make it more free-flowing.
Arrange the images: Before gluing, play around with the placement to see where each image feels best. There’s no right or wrong way to do this, just make it feel visually appealing to you. Once you’re happy with the layout, glue or tape the images and words in place.
Add finishing touches: Use markers, stickers, or even decorative washi-tape to add more personality to your vision board. You can add caligraphy or cut-out of important elements like your name, key dates, or specific reminders of why these goals matter.
5.Don’t forget to Display Your Vision Board!
Put it somewhere visible: Your vision board is a tool for daily inspiration, so place it where you’ll see it often—on your wall, next to your desk, or above your bed. Spend a few minutes each day reflecting on the board, imagining yourself achieving your goals, and feeling the emotions of success.
Life is beautiful. It is beautiful and chaotic and full of mystery. When you’re a mom, living life to the fullest can feel impossible because you have these amazing little children who need you and require your attention, devotion, and your sacrifice. Don’t get me wrong - the sacrifices we make for the ones we love are worthwhile and meaningful. However, it is possible to maintain some semblance of individualism and vision in this season of life. Pursuing individual goals as a young, new, or transitioning mom can happen with intentionality and consistency. The key to a successful vision board is the emotional connection you build with it. It’s all about setting your intentions and allowing yourself the space to realize those desires.
It can even be fun!
